Imagine…

  • a monkey stealing your groceries as you walk down the street.

  • a person buying a shirt in a thrift store and finding thousands of dollars in the pocket.

  • a bride learning that her in-laws want $25,000 before her wedding can go on.

All of these stories are true! This new edition presents 20 new or updated human-interest stories are adapted from news sources all over the world. These captivating stories are told as simply as possible -- almost exclusively in the present tense -- and most stories are less than ½ page long. Easy True Stories, Second Edition, by Sandra Heyer, is a companion book to All New Easy True Stories, which is at the same level but features all new stories and exercises. These two parallel readers give students the option of lingering at the low-beginning level. They can go back and forth between Easy True Stories and All New Easy True Stories, or they can complete first one book and then the other. Or teachers can use Easy True Stories one semester and All New Easy True Stories the next. That way, students who stay in a low-beginning class when their classmates move on to the next level can essentially repeat the class but with all new material. Combined, the two books offer 40 stories, giving teachers multiple opportunities to incorporate reading into their thematically-based instructional units.

Features

  • First, students look at a series of 9 pictures while the teacher tells the story. This pre-reading step gives students a global understanding of the story before they read.

  • Next, students read the story.

  • Finally, students complete exercises following each story to develop basic reading skills as well as build pronunciation, spelling, and vocabulary proficiency.

  • MP3 audio recordings of each story are available free at www.pearsonelt.com/truestories.

  • An expanded To the Teacher section gives additional teacher support with step-by-step phonics lessons, plus strategies for making the readings more interactive.

"Can't say enough positive things about this book and this entire series. I bought True Stories by chance last year and ever since I've slowly been buying every level.

I sent for this level two months ago, a bit concerned because I really had no idea, of how the author had laid the story out. Needn't have worried. The one or two sentence captions under each of the picture frames are so clearly illustrated that virtually any student at any level can figure out what's going on. I have a nine-year-old student who is finally motivated to read and a mature adult student who normally has terrible difficulty understanding new vocabulary, who takes great pleasure in being able to figure out new words without having to ask for a translation.

The vocabulary is repeated and then the story is printed again, in paragraph form, with an actual photograph of the hero of the chapter. The exercises following the story are well-thought out and very useful. I'm ready to get the sequel to this level - All New Very Easy True Stories. Hopefully the author will make a third book - or by then my students will be so skilled that we can go on to the next level!!!

What an incredible resource this is!"

  • I've been using this series to teach my ESL classes for over a dozen years now and I can't recommend it more highly. The stories are engaging and the kids really enjoy them. The reason I had to buy a whole new set was because I gave my old ones to my brother-in-law, who teaches English in Japan. Before a recent visit there, he'd asked me if there were any ESL books I'd recommend and the True Stories series came immediately to mind.
  • This book is good for adults with very limited reading skills. I use it with an ESL student and he likes the way the stories are introduced (one sentence + one picture at a time). After he has mastered that step, he moves on to seeing the whole story again in paragraph form.

There are some good, challenging exercises with each story. The best part is that the stories are true and interesting. Recommended.
  • For those working with adults with significant reading difficulties,Very Easy True Stories provides interesting stories for them. Teaching skills is important; and this book also gives the student a break from the intensive work of skill building to actually apply the reading skills. The stories are interesting and well written. The exercises following the stories reinforce skills, and test comprehension. I wish there were books which incorporate so nicely different ways to successfully practice reading.
  • I teach basic level ESL in an adult education program. This book has been a wonderful supplement to our lessons. The stories are written at an appropriate level but are not juvenile.
  • This series was recommended to me by a veteran teacher. These are high interest stories for adults learning the English language. Adult students enjoyed reading these stories, answering the questions, and discussing what they read with others. I even enjoyed reading the stories.

  • I used this series for years to teach ESL to adults and high school students. I loved all the books in the series. The lowest level books were great because of the repetition!! Kept the students interested in the stories. They were always a good stepping stone to conversations. Great exercises to review the grammar and vocab at all levels!!
